Dubai Unveils Dh1.4 Billion Stormwater Drainage Upgrade to Future-Proof City Infrastructure
Business
In a landmark move to safeguard against climate challenges, Dubai Municipality has launched four ambitious infrastructure projects worth Dh1.439 billion as part of its revolutionary 'Tasreef' stormwater drainage initiative. This strategic investment will transform the emirate's water management systems to meet future demands while setting new benchmarks for urban resilience.
The comprehensive upgrade focuses on delivering cutting-edge solutions that will dramatically reduce flood risks while optimizing the performance of existing drainage networks across key districts including Nad Al Hamar, Dubai International Airport surroundings, Al Garhoud, and several prominent residential and commercial zones like Jumeirah and Al Quoz.
Engineers will construct over 36 kilometers of state-of-the-art drainage lines that will integrate with the massive Tasreef tunnel system - creating a unified network spanning the entire emirate. The expansion promises to deliver unprecedented water management capacity while lowering operational expenses and elevating service quality for Dubai's growing population.

These developments represent a crucial component of Dubai's long-term strategy to establish world-leading, climate-adaptive urban infrastructure that maintains the city's competitive edge as a global metropolis prepared for environmental challenges.
A Century of Forward-Thinking Design
Eng Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized how these projects mark a quantum leap in stormwater management technology. "The Tasreef initiative isn't just about solving today's problems - we're engineering solutions that will remain effective through seven generations," he stated during the announcement.
The visionary project is designed with extraordinary scalability - capable of handling projected rainfall increases up to seven times current levels over the next hundred years. This future-proof approach reinforces Dubai's position among elite cities boasting next-generation infrastructure ready for climate uncertainties.
"Tasreef represents more than concrete and pipelines," bin Ghalita explained. "It embodies our commitment to sustainable urban evolution through intelligent planning that makes daily life better while protecting our environment." The official highlighted how this aligns perfectly with municipal goals for integrated water resource management using resilient technologies designed for tomorrow's needs today.
With an unprecedented budget allocation reaching Dh30 billion upon full implementation, Tasreef stands as both Dubai’s largest-ever stormwater project and one its most economically efficient – projected to slash construction and maintenance costs by approximately one-fifth compared to conventional systems while significantly extending infrastructure lifespan across all connected networks citywide.
