Why UAE Moms Still Trust Grandma's Wisdom Over Digital Parenting Advice

Lifestyle

In today's digital age where parenting advice is just a click away, an overwhelming majority of new mothers in the UAE are choosing to rely on a more traditional source of wisdom - their own mothers. A revealing new survey shows that despite the abundance of online resources and professional support, grandmothers remain the most trusted advisors for young parents.

The comprehensive study titled 'Sources of Trust in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait' uncovered that seven out of ten GCC mothers prefer turning to family members rather than digital platforms when seeking childcare guidance. This trend persists even with growing access to parenting apps, online communities and healthcare professionals.

The Comfort of Generational Wisdom

"My mother is staying with me during these first few months, and her presence is a blessing," shares Amal Hurieh, a Jordanian expat living in Dubai. "Even though I have access to all kinds of online advice, nothing compares to the comfort of her words and experience."

The research surveyed over five hundred new mothers across three Gulf countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait), finding that an impressive seventy-one percent rely primarily on family guidance during their child's crucial early development years (0-4 years old). In the UAE specifically, seventy percent reported depending exclusively on personal experiences passed down through generations.

30% cited "information overload" as their primary challenge when using digital resources. 71% prefer family advice over modern parenting apps/groups. 70% in UAE trust only personal/family experiences.

"During one particularly difficult night when my baby wouldn't sleep despite trying every method I'd read about online," Amal recalls emotionally. "My mother simply took her in her arms with that special lullaby she used to sing me - something no app could replicate."

Navigating Modern Parenting Pressures

The study reveals many young mothers feel overwhelmed by conflicting information from various sources. Zoya Chhabra from Abu Dhabi described her breastfeeding struggles: "The internet was relentless about breastfeeding benefits while I could barely produce milk. My mother was my rock through this nightmare."

"She reminded me formula feeding was perfectly fine," continues Zoya who eventually switched after months of exhausting attempts at pumping milk multiple times nightly while battling guilt and sleep deprivation.

TIMELESS TRADITIONS IN MODERN TIMES

Filipino expat Felizze Faye Flores-Navarro cherishes continuing practices from her childhood: “I still rock my baby like my mom did—despite what articles say about creating dependency.” She also uses traditional oils for skincare rather than commercial products popular today.

Cooking represents another generational bridge—Felizze prepares fresh meals using recipes handed down instead store-bought baby food common among contemporaries: “Coming from Philippines’ vegetable-rich Nueva Ecija province taught us valuing homegrown nutrition which I want passing onto children.”
