UAE Workforce Crisis: 70% Employees Say Salaries Can't Keep Up With Soaring Living Costs

UAE employees discussing salary concerns

A startling new study reveals that the UAE's workforce is at a breaking point, with nearly 70% of employees reporting their salaries are being crushed under the weight of skyrocketing living expenses. The research by global consultancy Korn Ferry paints a troubling picture of employee dissatisfaction that could trigger massive turnover in coming months.

The numbers speak volumes - 66% of UAE professionals feel trapped in an impossible situation where their paychecks simply can't stretch far enough. What's more alarming? Those who feel this financial squeeze most acutely are three times more likely to hand in their resignation.

In this high-pressure environment, compensation packages have become the make-or-break factor for job decisions. Employees aren't just looking at base salaries anymore - they're scrutinizing every element from housing allowances to education benefits with microscope precision.

"We're seeing professionals being squeezed from all sides," explains Vijay Gandhi, Korn Ferry's EMEA Regional Director. "Housing costs are ballooning, school fees keep climbing, but salaries remain stagnant. This perfect storm has made compensation the number one reason people walk away from jobs."

The firm's groundbreaking Workforce 2026 report uncovers even more concerning trends - a staggering 80% of UAE employees would jump ship for better pay and benefits without hesitation. Job security and career advancement opportunities rank as close second and third priorities that could lure talent away.

Digging deeper into employee psychology, researchers identified two additional pressure points: inadequate benefits packages and lackluster professional development opportunities are pushing more professionals toward the exit doors each month.

The numbers tell a sobering story - Korn Ferry's comprehensive survey of 843 companies revealed average salary increases crawling along at just 4%. In today's economic climate, that modest bump might as well be standing still when stacked against double-digit inflation in key expense categories.

A glimmer of hope appears in Hays' GCC Salary Guide projection that three-quarters of UAE workers anticipate raises next year. But with most recent increases falling between 2.5-5%, many wonder if it will be enough to stem the tide of resignations.

As expats continue dominating the workforce (projected at 88.5% by next year), experts warn the Emirates faces unique challenges maintaining its position as a global talent magnet amid these financial pressures. "The same expat engine driving our economic growth is now demanding stability above all else," notes one analyst reviewing Korn Ferry's multinational survey spanning over15 ,000professionals across ten major markets including US ,UK ,KSA,and India . This wake-up call comes as GDP growth projections hit an optimistic five percent annually .The question remains whether compensation packages can rise to meet both economic opportunity and employee expectations before talent drains away to greener pastures .
