Abu Dhabi Boosts Arabic Learning in Kindergartens with New Weekly Language Policy

Main

In an exciting development for early education, Abu Dhabi's education authority has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to strengthen Arabic language learning from the earliest school years. Starting in the 2026-2026 academic year, all kindergartens across private and partnership schools will implement mandatory weekly Arabic instruction sessions.

The new policy requires schools to dedicate 240 minutes (four hours) each week specifically for Arabic language teaching across all early childhood levels - from nursery programs through second kindergarten. This commitment will grow even stronger in the following year, increasing to 300 minutes (five hours) weekly beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.

The Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), which announced the policy, emphasized that this strategic move comes at a crucial time in children's linguistic development. "Our research shows these early years represent the golden window for language acquisition," explained an ADEK spokesperson. "By embedding structured Arabic learning during this formative period, we're giving children lifelong advantages."

Mariam Al Hallami, Executive Director of Early Education at ADEK, shared her vision behind the initiative: "This goes far beyond traditional language lessons. We're creating immersive experiences where children naturally connect with Arabic through play, stories and daily interactions - making it feel as comfortable as their first language."

Dual-Track Approach for Diverse Learners

The program features two specialized learning pathways tailored to students' backgrounds: an enriched curriculum for native speakers focusing on advanced proficiency; and a foundational track designed specifically for non-native learners starting their Arabic journey.

"We recognize every child enters kindergarten with different exposure to Arabic," Al Hallami noted. "Our dual-track system ensures each student receives appropriate support while maintaining high expectations for all."
