Hollywood superstar Will Smith has revealed some shocking career decisions that continue to haunt him - turning down iconic roles in three of cinema's most celebrated films: The Matrix, Inception and Django Unchained.

In a candid interview with radio station Kiss Xtra, the Oscar-winning actor confessed that Christopher Nolan first offered him the lead role in his mind-bending masterpiece Inception. However, Smith admitted he simply didn't understand the complex plot at the time.

"I don't think I've ever said it publicly," Smith revealed. "Chris Nolan brought me Inception first, and I didn't get it. Now that I think about it, it's those movies that go into alternate realities... they don't pitch well."

The role eventually went to Leonardo DiCaprio, becoming one of his most successful films. This wasn't the only missed opportunity for Smith - he also famously passed on Neo in The Matrix after an unconventional pitch from the Wachowski siblings.

"They described this concept where you could stop mid-jump and people could see around you 360 degrees," Smith recalled in a 2019 YouTube video. At the time, their focus on revolutionary camera techniques rather than story left him unconvinced.

The third major regret came when Quentin Tarantino approached him for Django Unchained. While acknowledging it was "as perfect a story as you could ever want," creative differences led to his departure.

"I wanted to make that movie so badly," Smith told The Hollywood Reporter. "But I felt it had to be a love story, not a vengeance story about slavery."

Despite these high-profile rejections, Will Smith remains one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. Recently marking his return to music after two decades with new album Based on a True Story while continuing his acting career at age 55 proves there are still many chapters left in his remarkable entertainment journey.
