Dubai is making bold moves to elevate women in the fast-growing world of competitive gaming, as revealed by a top official. The emirate aims to create more opportunities for female gamers to shine on international stages through strategic initiatives.

Women's empowerment stands at the core of Dubai's esports vision, with both visibility campaigns and financial backing designed to nurture homegrown talent, explains Muna Al Falasi, Director of Esports and Strategy at Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).

"While competitive gaming remains relatively new in Emirati culture, particularly for women, we're committed to transforming this landscape," Al Falasi states. She highlights DET's comprehensive approach that combines government support with grassroots engagement.

The official points to gaming's massive popularity among youth as a springboard for change: "We're creating platforms through major gaming festivals where emerging talents can develop their skills while putting Dubai firmly on the global esports map."

November 2023 marked a watershed moment when UAE sent its pioneering squad of female gamers against regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia - currently dominating Middle Eastern esports. This groundbreaking participation signaled new possibilities for Emirati women in professional gaming. Al Falasi shared these insights during an Arab Media Summit panel alongside industry leaders Abdullah Bin Baz (Baz Station founder) and Mohammed Al Bsimi (True Gaming agency founder). The high-profile summit gathered approximately 8,000 media experts from across Arab nations. Mohammed identified cultural adaptation as key challenge: "We must cultivate attendance habits at live esports events - this experiential aspect remains underdeveloped regionally despite growing digital engagement."
