The Rise of Pimple Positivity: How a Skin Movement Is Redefining Beauty in the UAE

Lifestyle

If you’ve ever had a breakout, you’ll understand the urge to hide it with concealer or foundation, especially when it’s more than just a pimple or two. For many, severe acne — those inflamed, red bumps that feel impossible to ignore — has been reason enough to cancel plans and avoid stepping out altogether. For decades, society made us believe that acne should be covered up or erased entirely. But something changed around 2018 — and today, the acne conversation is shifting in a whole new direction.

Welcome to the age of skin positivity, where visible blemishes are no longer seen as flaws to hide but as a natural part of being human. This movement, which celebrates real, unfiltered skin, is gaining traction worldwide — and even influencing how the beauty and fashion industries operate. Surprisingly, the loudest voices in this campaign are coming from influencers, models, and everyday people who are ditching filters and speaking out against skin shaming.

A major turning point came when supermodel and reality TV star Kendall Jenner appeared on the Golden Globes red carpet, unafraid to show visible acne. It was a bold moment that sparked global discussion — not because she had blemishes, but because she didn’t hide them. Kendall has spoken openly about her past struggles with acne, recalling how it once affected her self-esteem so deeply that she would avoid eye contact during conversations. But now, her confidence has inspired others, with her viral tweet telling a fan to “never let that stop you” becoming a rallying cry for acne acceptance.

Acne Isn’t Just Skin Deep

In the UAE, dermatologists are seeing firsthand how acne impacts more than just appearance. Dr Fady G Haddad, a dermatologist at Shamma Clinic in Dubai, explains that 80–90% of people will experience acne at some point in their lives. While it’s most common during teenage years, adult acne — particularly in women — is on the rise, often due to stress, hormonal changes, and overuse of cosmetics.

“Acne can cause a great deal of emotional distress,” says Dr Haddad. “Many adult women feel frustrated or embarrassed, and their self-esteem often takes a hit.” He also notes how media and online platforms have raised beauty standards to unrealistic heights. “People often compare themselves to influencers or celebrities with flawless-looking skin, not realizing that filters, makeup, and editing tools are involved.”

As a result, Dr Haddad often finds himself offering more than just skincare treatments. He sometimes serves as a coach, encouraging patients to focus on what truly matters. “I tell women with busy careers or family responsibilities that they’re already doing something meaningful — acne doesn’t change that. Having spots doesn’t make you less valuable.”

Still, some individuals experience psychological effects so deep that Dr Haddad recommends therapy alongside dermatological care. For these patients, the emerging concept of pimple positivity can offer a fresh perspective and emotional relief.

How the Movement Began

Although celebrities like Emma Stone and Cameron Diaz have talked about their acne in the past, the real momentum for the current skin positivity wave came from a new generation of influencers.

One of the most notable voices is Louisa Northcote, a Dubai-raised model who launched the #FreeThePimple campaign just before appearing on Britain’s Next Top Model. Louisa has chronic, painful acne that leaves noticeable marks on her skin. When she learned that the show’s first episode would require contestants to go makeup-free, she decided to take control of her own narrative — by posting a bare-faced selfie online and sharing her story.

The response was overwhelming. Not only did her followers support her, but global publications like Teen Vogue and Cosmopolitan covered her campaign. Her bravery encouraged others to speak up, with many posting their own unfiltered skin journeys under hashtags like #SkinPositivity and #PimplePower.

Louisa’s experience shows that acne can deeply affect how people live — even simple tasks like running to the shop or attending school can become daunting. But her message is clear: acne is not shameful. “Men don’t get asked to cover their acne, so why should women?” she asks. “Skin should never be considered offensive.”

She still wears makeup for fun, but not to hide. “Acne is just marks on the skin — it’s not your identity. It will eventually fade, but who you are stays the same.”

A Changing Industry

The ripple effects of this movement are being felt within the fashion and beauty industries as well. Nicole Rodrigues, founder of Diva Models Dubai, welcomes the new narrative around skin acceptance. “Growing up, many people dealt with poor self-esteem,” she says. “Movements like this help reshape those old patterns and promote confidence in diversity.”

While Nicole admits that most professional models don’t arrive at castings with visible acne, she also emphasizes that it’s never a deal-breaker. “Makeup and editing can handle temporary breakouts. It’s absurd to reject a model over something so natural.”

Nicole, a former model herself, believes the industry is often misunderstood. “Photoshoots often depict fantasy — not everyday reality. It’s important to recognize the difference.”

Social Media’s Role — For Better or Worse

Of course, social media has played a complicated role in beauty standards. While it once fueled unrealistic ideals, it is now being used to challenge those very narratives.

Dubai-based blogger Tehzeeb Huda, founder of The Tezzy Files, believes it’s about time. “I know influencers who use so many filters and face-editing apps that you wouldn’t recognise them in real life,” she says. “But now, we’re seeing a shift — from weight to skin tone to acne, people are pushing back and embracing their true selves.”

She also believes that we, as users, need to take responsibility. “Social media is just a tool. We decide how it’s used. If more influencers stood up for real beauty, it could create lasting change.”

When celebrities like Lena Dunham, Justin Bieber, and Ruby Rose post about their own skin struggles, it amplifies the message. “These are people with global platforms saying, ‘We’re not perfect, and that’s okay.’ Confidence, not flawless skin, is what makes someone truly beautiful.”

Redefining Beauty in the UAE and Beyond

The pimple positivity movement isn’t just about embracing acne — it’s about rejecting the idea that beauty must conform to impossible standards. In the UAE, where image often carries heavy weight in both social and professional spheres, this message feels especially powerful.

By encouraging people to embrace their natural skin, influencers, dermatologists, and industry professionals are helping to build a more inclusive definition of beauty — one that doesn’t require a filter or a full face of makeup to feel worthy.

So whether you’re facing acne, freckles, fine lines or anything in between, the message is simple: you’re still beautiful, just as you are.
