UAE Drivers Reveal: Toll and Parking Fees Hurt Wallets More Than Fuel – Here’s How They’re Saving Big

Car

While fuel prices saw an uptick this July, many motorists in the UAE are saying it’s not petrol that’s burning a hole in their pockets—it’s the mounting costs of Salik tolls and paid parking.

A recent poll on Gulf News’ official Instagram showed that 67% of participants find daily toll and parking fees tougher to manage than fuel expenses.

With the introduction of peak-hour pricing for both Salik and public parking, residents are adapting their daily routines to keep costs down without sacrificing convenience.

We spoke to everyday commuters who shared their practical tips and hacks for saving money on these recurring charges.

Choosing Scenic, Toll-Free Routes

For Olga Sukhanova, founder of COLABB, saving time is usually worth the toll cost. However, when she isn’t pressed for time, she opts for the slower but more enjoyable toll-free route along Jumeirah Beach Road.

“It’s a more relaxing drive with beautiful coastal views,” she says. “Sure, it has more traffic lights and lower speed limits, but I find it’s worth the trade-off to avoid toll fees.”

Balancing Salik and Parking with Busy Schedules

Katherine Read, founder of The Holiday Mode and Short Stay Circle, admits she often tops up her Salik account more frequently than refueling her car. “These daily toll and parking fees add up quickly, especially when juggling a busy work life,” she explains. “Paid parking is also a factor, but Salik charges definitely pinch the most for someone constantly on the move.”

Rethinking Routes and Transport to Cut Costs

Data scientist Akshay Nimbalkar has revamped his daily travel habits to avoid toll roads and pricey parking. “I steer clear of routes with Salik, even if it means a longer drive,” he shares. “For busy areas like Downtown Dubai or Marina, I prefer hopping on the Metro or using ride-hailing apps. It saves money and spares me the hassle of finding parking.”

Public Transport as a Weekend Saver

PR professional Sumit Augustine has also made conscious changes, choosing longer, toll-free routes for daily commutes like school runs and office trips. “I leave earlier to avoid the stress of tolls and still get there on time,” she says.

On weekends, she switches gears to public transport. “I use the Metro, buses, or Dubai Tram whenever possible because it’s both convenient and cost-effective. No parking fees, no Salik worries.”

Smart Strategies for Managing Rising Costs

With Salik and parking fees now varying by time and location, UAE drivers are getting creative. From scenic toll-free alternatives to embracing public transport, these small changes help keep expenses in check without compromising daily convenience.

If you’re looking to cut down on your driving costs, consider adjusting your routes, timing, or even trying public transit for short trips—it might save you more than you think.
