How tourists can shop tax-free in UAE
Lifestyle
Visitors to the UAE can now enjoy an even more rewarding shopping experience — thanks to a fully digital VAT refund system that allows them to claim tax back effortlessly before departing the country. Designed to make shopping smarter and simpler, the system is a global first: a completely paperless, fully automated process that turns tax refunds into a fast, hassle-free experience.
Tourists who make purchases in the UAE can apply for VAT refunds through Planet, the official operator authorised by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). The system connects directly with thousands of registered retailers across the country, allowing shoppers to complete their tax-free transactions digitally — whether in-store or online.
With this technology, visitors only need to scan their passports at participating outlets and request a tax-free transaction. The merchant then enters their details into the digital platform, generating an electronic tax invoice. Shoppers receive a Planet tax-free tag or SMS with a secure link to view their purchases on the Planet shopper portal. From there, validation and refund can be handled seamlessly at departure points across the UAE.
To qualify for a refund, tourists must meet a few requirements. The minimum spend is Dh250, and only non-residents are eligible — meaning UAE citizens and airline crew members cannot claim. Purchases must be for personal use, and goods should remain unused before departure. Items such as vehicles, boats, services, and consumed goods are excluded from the scheme.
Before leaving the country, travelers need to validate their purchases at one of Planet’s dedicated checkpoints, located at all UAE airports, seaports, and land borders. Validation must be done before checking in luggage. The process is simple: present your passport, goods, and digital or printed invoices. The system then classifies transactions into Green Channel Validation (approved instantly) or Red Channel Validation (requiring a brief inspection).
Refunds can be received in cash (up to Dh35,000), or transferred to a credit card or digital wallet. Cash refunds are issued immediately, while card or wallet refunds are typically processed within nine days. Each tax-free transaction carries a small Dh4.80 service fee, and visitors receive back 87% of the VAT amount paid.
Travelers have 90 days from purchase to validate their transactions and 12 months from validation to claim their refund. Importantly, goods must leave the UAE within six hours of validation to remain eligible.
This next-generation system not only simplifies tax refunds but also supports the UAE’s ongoing drive toward smart government services and digital transformation. By combining innovation with convenience, the UAE ensures that shopping here remains not only luxurious — but also tax-free for visitors ready to explore, spend, and save.
