UAE surgeons warn against 'cheap' cosmetic surgery fixes

Lifestyle

Cosmetic surgery can offer impressive transformations, but UAE doctors are urging patients to prioritise safety over shortcuts or low-cost procedures. Following a recent Federal Supreme Court ruling clarifying the liability of plastic surgeons, medical experts emphasise the importance of thorough preparation, realistic expectations, and fully informed consent.

Transparency and Patient Safety Dr Vikesh Vij, Plastic Surgeon at Kaya Clinics, stresses that elective surgeries require the highest standard of honesty. “If the risks outweigh the benefits, I won’t perform the procedure, no matter what the patient wants,” he says. “It’s our responsibility to clearly communicate risks, recovery time, and realistic outcomes — sugar-coating is never an option.”

The UAE court recently ruled that cosmetic procedures are not urgent medical treatments, making surgeons liable for negligence. The decision followed a tragic case where a patient died due to insufficient care during a body contouring procedure. Surgeons across the country have welcomed the ruling as it reinforces patient safety and professional accountability.

Keeping Surgeries Safe and Simple Dr Maurizio Viel, from Cornerstone Clinic, supports the ruling and stresses that surgeries should be simple, low-risk, and carefully planned. “Sometimes it’s safer to split procedures into multiple stages,” he notes. “Experienced surgeons must prioritise ethical planning and patient safety above all else.”

Dr Rani Umul Khair, Specialist Plastic Surgeon at Dubai London Hospital Jumeirah, highlights the importance of pacing and preparation. “I schedule two consultations before surgery and provide consent forms well in advance so patients can review and ask questions,” she says. She also recommends psychiatric evaluations or counselling for some patients and advises waiting at least six months after breastfeeding or stabilising weight for ‘mommy makeover’ procedures.

The Dangers of ‘Cheap’ Fixes Many complications arise when patients seek low-cost alternatives, often abroad, where facilities may not meet proper medical standards. Dr Vij explains, “I’ve seen infections, scarring, asymmetries, and other issues that could have been avoided with a qualified surgeon and sterile environment. The emotional toll on patients is significant, as they deal with both physical and psychological consequences.”

He advises, “Never compromise on quality for the sake of saving money. Cost is important, but this is your body.”

Patient Responsibilities Doctors also emphasise that patients play a crucial role in ensuring safe outcomes. Dr Chandra Bose Vellani Thamunni, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Al Qassimi Hospital, Sharjah, notes, “Patients must understand the procedure fully and follow medical advice.”

Dr Maurizio adds that complete disclosure of medical history is essential for surgeons to assess risks accurately. Dr Rani recommends reviewing a surgeon’s portfolio, including before-and-after photos, to understand their skill and aesthetic approach. Dr Vij encourages patients to research their surgeons, verify qualifications, and confirm experience with the specific procedure.

Final Advice Ultimately, elective cosmetic procedures are a serious commitment. UAE surgeons urge prospective patients to prioritise safety, choose experienced professionals, and maintain realistic expectations. Thorough consultations, honest communication, and informed decision-making are the keys to achieving safe, satisfactory results and avoiding unnecessary complications.
