Menopause hair loss: UAE experts share tips

Healthy

Menopause is a journey of transformation — physically, mentally, and emotionally. From hot flashes to restless nights, it brings plenty of changes, but few are as visible or distressing as hair thinning and shedding. For many women, seeing their once-thick hair lose volume can feel like losing a piece of their identity. Yet, UAE experts say there’s good news: with the right care, nutrition, and treatments, you can restore your hair’s vitality and confidence.

Hair loss during menopause is primarily hormonal. “As oestrogen and progesterone levels fall, hair growth slows and shedding increases,” explains Maria Dowling, founder of Mariadowling Salon in Dubai. “These hormones help keep hair in its growth phase longer. When they drop, hair becomes finer, more fragile, and grows for a shorter time before falling.”

At the same time, the balance between female and male hormones changes. According to Dr. Hannabi Hashimkutty, Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Aster Clinic, “Lower oestrogen levels reduce natural oil production, leaving hair dry and brittle. Meanwhile, relatively higher androgens can shrink follicles, especially at the crown, leading to diffuse thinning rather than bald patches.”

Still, not every case of midlife hair loss is linked to menopause. Experts stress the importance of ruling out other causes such as thyroid disorders, iron or vitamin D deficiency, zinc deficiency, or low protein intake — all of which can accelerate shedding. “Sudden hair loss can also follow weight loss, certain medications, autoimmune conditions, or illness,” explains Dr. Jobeetha Yoosuf, Specialist Dermatologist at Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital. “A scalp exam and blood tests help identify the real cause before starting treatment.”

Once the underlying issues are identified, the focus shifts to revitalising scalp health and supporting new growth. “Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp,” Dowling emphasises. Treatments like topical minoxidil, oral medications, or low-level laser therapy can slow down thinning and promote regrowth. “While results vary, these therapies help maintain existing hair and improve density,” she says.

New regenerative treatments are also gaining popularity in the UAE. Dr. Yoosuf explains that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, microneedling with growth factors, and exosome-based solutions show encouraging results. In certain cases, doctors may prescribe mild anti-androgen medications like spironolactone to reduce hormonal effects — but only under medical supervision.

Beyond treatments, what you eat matters just as much as what you apply. “Hair is made of keratin, a protein — so protein is key,” says Dowling. “Aim for at least 60 grams a day from sources like eggs, fish, and lean meats.” She also recommends iron-rich foods for oxygen transport to follicles, vitamin D for new growth, vitamin A for scalp hydration, and vitamin C for collagen formation and iron absorption.

Dr. Hashimkutty adds that including phytoestrogens and healthy fats — such as flaxseed, walnuts, and salmon — can help support hormone balance. Regular exercise, yoga, and relaxation techniques not only reduce stress (a major trigger for hair loss) but also improve circulation, bringing more nutrients to the scalp.

Lifestyle and medication awareness play a role too. “Some weight-loss injections or strict diets can trigger shedding,” warns Dr. Hashimkutty. “Always consult your doctor before starting new treatments.” She reminds women that menopausal hair thinning is gradual, not sudden — and with patience and consistency, improvement is possible.

While the journey can feel emotional, experts emphasise that menopausal hair changes are not permanent or hopeless. “Your hair reflects your overall health,” says Dowling. “By caring for your scalp, eating well, and managing stress, you can maintain thicker, shinier, and stronger hair through this stage of life.”

Here’s how to protect and strengthen your hair during menopause:

  1. Focus on scalp health: Keep the scalp clean, hydrated, and nourished with gentle detoxes or serums to support follicle activity.

  2. Try proven treatments: Consult a dermatologist about topical minoxidil, PRP therapy, or low-level laser treatments for thicker growth.

  3. Upgrade your nutrition: Prioritise protein (around 60g daily), iron, vitamins A, D, and C, and omega-rich foods.

  4. Watch for deficiencies: Monitor zinc, vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D levels through regular blood tests.

  5. Adopt a balanced lifestyle: Practice yoga, meditation, or light exercise to ease stress and improve circulation.

  6. Be patient and consistent: Visible results take time — consistency matters more than quick fixes.

Menopause is a natural chapter, not the end of beauty or vitality. With knowledge, self-care, and modern medical support, women in the UAE can navigate this transition confidently — and let their strength, resilience, and healthy hair shine through.
