UAE: Send money in 10 seconds using mobile numbers
Finance
Sending money within the UAE has become faster and simpler than ever. Instead of entering long account details, you can now make a transfer using only the recipient’s mobile number and complete the transaction in seconds. This convenient experience is now possible through “Aani”, a national instant payment system introduced to modernise the way people in the UAE move money.
This digital platform was introduced to provide a faster, hassle-free payment option for everyday financial needs. Whether you are paying a friend back for lunch, receiving funds from family, or sorting out group expenses, you can complete the process on your phone without needing any traditional account information. The system is designed to work smoothly through mobile apps of licensed financial institutions, giving users direct access through channels they already use.
Once your bank supports Aani, all you need to do is enrol within your mobile banking app. Although the sign-up steps may differ slightly depending on your bank, the general process involves selecting the account you want to connect, confirming your personal details, and verifying your identity using your banking password or security PIN. When the setup is done, you’ll receive a confirmation notification or email that your account is now ready for instant transfers.
Once enrolled, users will find a range of convenient services inside their bank’s transfer menu. These include sending money to someone using their mobile number, requesting money from others, viewing pending requests, splitting a bill among multiple people, and making QR code payments at shops and restaurants. Processing fees, if any, are set by individual financial institutions. The system is expected to support QR payments across more locations soon, expanding how people pay in daily life.
The core features of the service include the ability to send money within a few seconds, request a payment from someone else, divide expenses among several people, manage pending requests, and pay using QR codes. All transactions made through this platform are limited to a maximum of Dh50,000 per transfer, ensuring secure and controlled movement of funds.
Aani is an initiative operated by Al Etihad Payments, a subsidiary of the Central Bank of the UAE, and was launched in October 2023. The service only supports domestic transfers within the country and works exclusively through UAE-licensed financial institutions. So far, dozens of banks and exchanges in the country have joined the system, including national and international names ranging from major local banks to digital-focused institutions and exchange houses. For users who prefer a dedicated app, Aani is also available for download on Apple and Android devices, though using it still requires an account with a licensed UAE institution.
In short, Aani brings everyday payments in the UAE a step closer to being fully digital, fast and effortless — all with nothing more than a mobile number.
