Carlos Alcaraz is currently waiting for the results of tests on his injured wrist before deciding whether to defend his French Open title next month, according to the world number two.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion sustained the injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open earlier this month and subsequently withdrew from the tournament.

Scans revealed that the injury was more severe than initially anticipated, prompting him to skip the Madrid Open as well.

"The next test will be crucial," Alcaraz told Spanish television channel TVE.

"We've been doing everything possible to ensure that this test turns out well. I am trying to be very patient. But we are doing okay; we are just waiting a bit longer."

"We have several tests lined up in the next few days, and then we will assess the injury and determine the next steps," the 22-year-old added.

Alcaraz, who was named Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus Awards on Monday, lost the world number one ranking to Jannik Sinner after being defeated by the Italian in the Monte Carlo Masters final just days before his Barcelona opener.

The French Open is scheduled to begin on May 24 in Paris.
