BYD Sealion 7 Performance Review: A Family EV That Delivers Power, Comfort, and Serious Value

Car

If you’ve been paying even the slightest attention to the car scene in Singapore, you’ll know that BYD has rapidly climbed the charts to become the island’s best-selling car brand. That success has been largely thanks to the BYD Atto 3, a quirky, well-equipped electric SUV that’s won over plenty of local drivers with its great value and practical features.

But for those who are after something more premium, spacious, and powerful, BYD has now launched the Sealion 7 — and if early demand is anything to go by, it could very well become BYD’s next breakout hit.

What is the BYD Sealion 7? The BYD Sealion 7 is a mid-size electric SUV that slots above the Atto 3 in the brand’s growing lineup. Measuring 4,830mm long and 1,925mm wide, it’s a substantial step up in size, giving it a more commanding presence on the road. With sleek lines, soft curves, and a coupe-like sloping roofline, it manages to look sporty and sophisticated at the same time.

The Sealion 7 is part of BYD’s "Ocean Series", alongside models like the BYD Seal (sedan), BYD Dolphin (compact hatchback), and other China-only models like the Seagull and Shark. The number "7" denotes its position in the range — above the upcoming Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid and the smaller Sealion 5 crossover.

Spacious and Smart Inside As you’d expect from a car this size, the interior of the Sealion 7 is generously roomy, especially in the rear. The flat floor creates ample legroom for three passengers, and despite the sloping roof, headroom remains surprisingly adequate. Rear visibility could be better, but the standard 360-degree camera system more than makes up for it during parking.

The seats are one of its highlights — plush, well-bolstered, and upholstered in premium quilted leather. Overall cabin design is minimalist, with a clean layout that resembles the BYD Seal more than the funky Atto 3.

You get a large 15.6-inch infotainment display that can rotate between landscape and portrait orientation — a neat party trick that’s now a BYD signature. Physical buttons are kept to a minimum, with just a few near the gear selector for drive modes and regenerative braking settings.

BYD has clearly put effort into making the Sealion 7 feel more premium than its predecessors. You’ll find leather and suede-like trim materials throughout the cabin, and the digital instrument cluster is nicely integrated into the dashboard, contributing to a modern and refined vibe.

Packed With Features True to BYD form, the Sealion 7 is packed to the brim with standard features. Advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, and autonomous emergency braking all come as standard.

Comfort-focused features include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and a wireless phone charger with built-in cooling vents to prevent your device from overheating — a thoughtful touch that highlights BYD’s attention to detail.

How Does It Drive? In Singapore, the Sealion 7 is offered in two variants. The entry-level "Premium" trim comes with a single-motor setup producing 308hp and 380Nm of torque, good for a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds — already impressive for a family SUV.

But for those who want real performance, the "Performance" variant tested here features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system with a staggering 523hp and 690Nm of torque. It launches from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds, making it one of the quickest family EVs on the market.

Despite its explosive straight-line speed, the Sealion 7 remains composed and controlled. Acceleration is brisk but smooth, and it doesn’t feel jerky or overwhelming. Where it really shines is in its comfort — the ride is refined, absorbing bumps with ease, and the cabin is whisper-quiet even at higher speeds.

Handling-wise, the Sealion 7 prioritises stability and comfort over agility. It’s secure and composed in corners, but the light and somewhat numb steering means it’s not a car aimed at driving enthusiasts. Still, for everyday use, it’s perfectly adequate.

So, Is the BYD Sealion 7 Worth It? In short, yes — especially if you’re after a well-rounded electric SUV that delivers on space, performance, comfort, and tech, all at a competitive price point. It may not be the most exciting car to drive, but as a complete family package, the BYD Sealion 7 Performance is a compelling choice. And if BYD’s recent track record is any indication, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it become the next big thing on Singapore’s roads.
