Discover Your Acne Type and Unlock the Best Skincare Solutions for Clearer Skin

Lifestyle

Dealing with acne can be frustrating, especially when those stubborn spots keep coming back. The key to managing acne-prone skin effectively lies in understanding the specific type of acne you have and choosing the right skincare to tackle it.

Just like how every person’s skin is unique, acne comes in many forms and degrees of severity. In Singapore, studies have shown that acne affects nearly 9 out of 10 teenagers aged 13 to 19, and it’s not just a teenage problem. Research also found that over 40% of adults in their 30s still struggle with acne.

Acne happens when pores get clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Take “maskne” for example — a new type of acne that has become common since mask-wearing became part of our daily routine during the pandemic. The combination of trapped moisture, heat, and bacteria inside the mask can block pores and cause breakouts.

Dr Cheong Lai Leng, a consultant dermatologist at LL Cheong Skin & Laser Clinic, explains that mask-wearing leads to buildup of oil, bacteria, and dead cells on the skin, which can clog pores. The humid, warm environment under the mask also makes skin more sensitive, especially in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. On top of that, pore-clogging makeup can worsen the problem.

Acne can appear in different forms, ranging from mild whiteheads and blackheads to more severe cysts and nodules. Whiteheads are small, skin-coloured bumps, while blackheads are open clogged pores that look dark on the surface. Papules are inflamed red bumps, and nodules are larger, painful lumps deep under the skin. Cysts contain pus but are usually hidden beneath the skin’s surface.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of acne. Mild acne can often be managed with over-the-counter topical products. However, if redness, swelling, or scarring appears, it’s best to consult a dermatologist early to avoid permanent marks. More severe cases with cysts and nodules require prompt medical attention to reduce the risk of scarring.

When selecting skincare products for acne-prone skin, avoid harsh ingredients like alcohol and strong astringents that dry out the skin excessively. Also, steer clear of abrasive scrubs and heavy creams that may clog pores or irritate sensitive skin.

Knowing your specific acne concern helps you pick the right treatment. For example, salicylic acid and alpha-hydroxy acids work well to gently exfoliate and clear whiteheads and blackheads. For inflammatory acne, products with anti-inflammatory ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and niacinamide can calm redness and reduce swelling.

The Effaclar range by La Roche-Posay offers targeted solutions for different acne concerns:

  • For acne-prone skin with marks: Effaclar Duo(+) is a lightweight, hydrating gel-cream that helps clear spots and reduce the risk of dark marks. It contains niacinamide to soothe redness, Procerad to minimise pigmentation, and ingredients that balance the skin’s microbiome to lower inflammation. Clinical tests showed a 56% improvement in acne marks within eight weeks.

  • For oily skin with blackheads: Effaclar K(+) is an ultra-light moisturiser that mattifies the skin and helps prevent blackheads. It contains carnosine to protect against oxidation, airlicium to absorb excess oil, and exfoliating acids to clear pores. A clinical study reported a 33% reduction in blackheads after eight weeks.

  • For oily skin with enlarged pores: Effaclar Mat controls oil and shine while reducing pore size. It contains sebulyse, which regulates sebum production and refines pores. Dermatological studies found over 76% of users experienced visibly smaller pores within four weeks.

Mask-related breakouts don’t have to be your new normal. By understanding your skin type and choosing the right products, you can keep acne under control and maintain a clearer complexion. Remember to seek professional advice if your acne worsens or doesn’t improve with home care.

Visit La Roche-Posay’s derma advisors at major Watsons and Guardian outlets across Singapore for a quick skin diagnosis and personalised recommendations. You can also find Effaclar Duo(+), K(+), and Mat at Watsons, Guardian, Lazada, and Shopee, with discounts up to 25% until 30 July. Usual prices are S$42.90 for Effaclar Duo(+) 40ml, S$42.90 for Effaclar K(+) 40ml, and S$38.90 for Effaclar Mat 40ml. Sign up online to receive a free Effaclar Duo(+) sample today.
