Often dubbed the "garden city," Singapore is home to an impressive amount of greenery, even amidst its urban surroundings.

Curious about how vibrant our little red dot truly is? A recent global study has ranked Singapore as the 12th most colourful city worldwide.

This positions it ten places behind Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, which is ranked second.

The study, released on April 13 by Irish travel insurance provider JustCover, analyzed hundreds of landscapes from nearly 80 prominent global destinations.

Using a colour analysis tool, the study assessed the number of unique colours in each image, resulting in a vibrancy score out of 100 for each city.

To ensure accurate results, only photos taken in clear daylight were selected, avoiding heavy filters or colour grading.

According to JustCover, Singapore boasts over 1.66 million distinct colours, achieving a vibrancy score of 63.2.

In contrast, Kuala Lumpur was found to have nearly 2.5 million unique colours, earning an impressive score of 94.5.

The report noted that Kuala Lumpur's modern skyscrapers and traditional architecture, including ornate temples and shrines, create a striking contrast. Iconic skyscrapers like the Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, and Exchange 106 feature rooftop viewing decks and bars that offer panoramic city views. For a taste of vibrant street life, Chinatown is a must-visit, bustling with lively markets and delicious street food.

The Batu Caves, located just outside Kuala Lumpur, were also highlighted for their stunning rainbow-coloured steps and shrines.

Details about cities ranked 11 and lower were not provided in the report.

Another Southeast Asian city that outperformed Singapore is Hanoi, Vietnam, which ranked eighth with a vibrancy score of 69 and over 1.8 million unique colours.

The report described Hanoi as a mix of "vivid buildings and shopfronts, dense street signage, and vibrant market stalls," with the city's Old Quarter being particularly notable.

In first place was Lisbon, Portugal, achieving a perfect score due to its more than 2.6 million unique colours according to the analysis.

JustCover noted that Lisbon is famous for its pastel-hued buildings and patterned tiles that adorn its historic areas, such as Alfama (the oldest district) and Bairro Alto. The city's iconic yellow trams, which navigate the narrow streets, add another layer of colour.
