Four Arrested in Singapore for Alleged Spiritual Scam Targeting Elderly Victims

News

Singapore authorities have apprehended four individuals, including three women and one man aged between 47 and 61, for their suspected involvement in a series of fraudulent "spiritual blessing" schemes targeting vulnerable victims.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) revealed in a Friday (June 6) press release that their investigation began after receiving a report from an elderly woman who fell prey to the scam at Chinatown. According to police, the elaborate con involved multiple perpetrators playing specific roles to deceive their targets.

"The first suspect approached the victim pretending to need directions to a Chinese physician," authorities explained. "A second woman then joined the conversation, claiming she knew of an excellent spiritual healer but said consultations had to be conducted outside due to overcrowding."

The scheme escalated when the suspects convinced the senior citizen they were helping her avoid misfortune. "The victim was persuaded that negative spiritual forces were affecting her life and that only immediate action could prevent disaster," police detailed in their statement.

In what investigators describe as an increasingly common scam pattern, the elderly woman was convinced to hand over S$700 cash and a gold necklace featuring a Guan Yin pendant during what appeared to be a blessing ceremony at Hong Lim Park. The items were placed in a black plastic bag during what turned out to be nothing more than an elaborate sleight-of-hand trick.

"She was instructed not to open the bag for one month," officers noted. "But when curiosity got the better of her, she discovered her valuables had been replaced with ordinary leaves."

Repeat Offenses Uncovered

A nearly identical incident occurred just days later on June 4 in Clementi, where another senior citizen lost S$700 after being convinced by two women - believed part of same criminal group - that placing money in special packaging would bring good fortune.

"Through meticulous ground investigations and CCTV analysis," SPF reported identifying all four suspects within days of receiving complaints. Officers made arrests on June 5 recovering S$1,311 cash along with ¥10,050 (approximately S$1,800). All seized funds are being held as evidence while prosecutors prepare fraud charges carrying potential ten-year prison sentences under Section 420 read with Section 109 Penal Code.

Police Warning To Public

"We cannot stress enough how important it is for citizens especially seniors remain vigilant against such scams no legitimate religious practitioner would ever demand valuables blessings always discuss unusual requests trusted family members before acting said SPF spokesperson reminding public immediately report suspicious approaches involving spiritual services either via hotline (1800-255-0000) online portal www.police.gov.sg/i-witness.
